Stop in today for free decals. Also, Dan made a 14 track album of original music done in retro video game style. He did an amazing job and brought in 50 copies of the album to be given away free. Dan even numbered them, so if he ever gets famous you could probably sell it and walk away with a nice bag of cash. Preferably a bag with a dollar sign on it, because style.

This last year has been incredible for Derek and I. And with edition of Dan, things are only getting better. I’ve been trying to think of my favorite moment during our second year and my mind keeps wandering back to what Derek said to me yesterday. Immediately when he walked in he told me that the new Pat The NES Punk podcast about the Sega Master System, used a picture of games from our store’s blog during the entire podcast.

There was no credit given to the store and that’s okay- that’s not what’s important and I couldn’t care less if our website was posted with the picture. The small surprises are what makes creating the store so amazing. Pat The NES Punk’s Golgo 13 video was the first gaming video to get me hooked on the online retro gaming community.

If after watching that video Derek said to me, “John, I know you’re better than me at Mario Kart, but we should open a video game store.”, I probably would’ve just laughed it off. (After agreeing with him that I am the superior Mario Kart player.)

It’s the little surprises that make this journey the best decision we’ve ever made. Little surprises like the Pat podcast, or when professional WWE wrestler Xavier Woods stopped by one morning and talked about how great the Sega Saturn is, and then he tweeted a picture on the WWE Twitter account of himself in front of the store while holding up the games he’d bought.

But even better are all the surprises from the local gaming community. GR8Bit Live was a major success and it’s growth potential is staggering to think about. The Grand Rapids gaming community is more than capable of greatness and the success of GR8Bit Live is only one of many examples of what we can all achieve.

Every story told to us by you, every treasure filled box brought in by you, especially the boxes filled with things I’d never even known of, is what gives me my only regret- that we didn’t believe in ourselves sooner.

This store is a journey. The destination isn’t perfection or money or the money bags with dollar signs that Dan’s chip tune music album will one day command. There is no destination, just the journey.

To paraphrase Phillip J. Fry, we’d prefer to be the world’s blankiest blank.

We look forward to everyone helping us fill in the blanks for many more years to come.

Black Friday Sale Details – Anniversary Day Update

There will be a change to the raffle for our anniversary day give away. No purchase will be required for a raffle ticket. Just show up 11/24 – 11/26 or on 11/28, write your name down (1 ticket per person) and receive a ticket. Saturday November 29 we will pull the winning tickets. The winning tickets will be posted on our blog and we will also call all of the winners. Again, no purchase is necessary for a raffle ticket, because that legally qualifies as a lottery and that could cause us a whole mess of problems. And thanks to Mike, we’ll be giving away free decals all day. Well, maybe not all day. We have a good amount of decals to give away, but they might go quickly.

Black Friday Update – Weekly Sale – Anniversary Update – Marvel vs Capcom – Mario Kart 64 – Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 3

We’re trying something new for Black Friday this year. Instead of opening early, we’re going to sleep in and open at noon. There will be a few sales that last from noon to 2pm and other sales that’ll last all day. We’ll announce the sales on 11/23. And we’ll be closed on Thanksgiving Day.

Saturday, November 29 will be our second year anniversary. To celebrate another incredible year, we are going to have a raffle. Any purchase made from 11/24 through 11/28 will get you a raffle ticket (only 1 per person). On 11/29 we will pull the winning tickets and post the results on the blog. Next Sunday we will announce what the prizes will be, along with some other cool jazz that we’ll be doing for the day. One of those jazzes will be some free decals.

Here is a preview of a couple of the decals we’ll be giving away for our two year anniversary. (Derek and I had to put them on our own 3DS systems immediately.) Thanks to Mike, the store is probably the video game decal capital of the world. Okay, maybe not the world, but at the very least, West Michigan.

Monroe Street Is Open!

The North Park bridge is open, Monroe street is back open… it’s no longer an American Gladiators obstacle course to get to the store. Although, I’ll miss the small talk with Laser and Ice.

Super Smash Bros Melee – Pokemon Stadium 1 & 2 – Destiny – Mario Party 4 – Borderlands Pre-Sequel – Mutant League Football

Last week I read an article about a study that showed video games do not make kids or teenagers more violent. I was happy to see that the long term experiment addressed everything wrong with all the previous experiments done on the same subject. (Predisposing factors & long term observation) However, as confident as I am in the study, it’s important to remember that no single experiment is done with the intention of providing a definitive answer. The experiment hasn’t been peer reviewed or duplicated, yet. Answers to these types of questions come from analyzing the results of multiple experiments. Multiple experiments are needed because a single experiment will fall somewhere on the spectrum between complete control in a lab and no control through natural observation. Any single experiment will have flaws, it’s unavoidable. That’s why many experiments are needed before a conclusion can be drawn.

My sister and I used to play Mortal Kombat and Virtua Cop when we were kids. Now she has a great family, helps so many people in her career as a DA, and is probably the nicest person I know. This is just anecdotal evidence, but it’s one of the reasons I’m confident that the results from the study will hold true.

(Steps down from soap box.)
